Memorial Pet Portraits
A hand-drawn pet portrait can be a comforting way to remember a much-loved companion. Created from your chosen photo by Sarah, an Exeter-based artist, each portrait is drawn with care to capture your pet’s character and give you a lasting reminder of the bond you shared.

Meet Sarah, an Exeter Pet Portrait Artist
Sarah is an artist based in Exeter, Devon, specialising in realistic hand-drawn pet portraits. Her work celebrates the character, expression and personality of much-loved pets, creating a lasting piece of artwork from a favourite photo.
Many of Sarah’s commissions are memorial pet portraits for owners whose pets have passed away. These pieces are always created with sensitivity and respect, giving families a personal way to remember the animal they loved.
Graphite Pencil and Coloured Pencil Pet Portraits
Sarah offers a choice of graphite pencil or coloured pencil portraits. Graphite pencil gives a classic, detailed black-and-white finish, while coloured pencil creates a warmer, more lifelike portrait with natural colour and depth.
For some pets, especially those with very soft or fluffy coats, Sarah may suggest soft pastels to achieve the most realistic result. She will always discuss this with you first, so you know what will work best for your chosen photo.
How Your Pet Portrait Is Created
Sarah works from photographs provided by you and will help you choose the image that best shows your pet’s features, expression and character. Clear photos are ideal, but if your pet has passed away and you only have older or lower-quality photos, please do not worry. Sarah will advise what is possible with care and honesty.

How Long Does a Pet Portrait Take?
Waiting times can vary depending on the current workload, but you will always be given an estimated timeframe when you book. Once your portrait has been started, smaller pieces usually take around one week, A4 portraits take around 1 to 2 weeks, A3 portraits take around 2 to 3 weeks, and A2 portraits may take 4 weeks or more.
The number of animals, the detail in the photo and the complexity of your pet’s fur can affect the time needed. Sarah will keep you updated throughout and can send progress photos if you would like to see the portrait as it is being created.
Collection, Delivery and Presentation
Once your portrait is complete, it will be carefully mounted, sealed in a protective cellophane sleeve and packaged for collection or delivery. Local collection may be available from Sarah’s home studio in Exeter, and delivery can be arranged for pet owners further afield.
Portraits are not currently supplied framed, giving you the freedom to choose a frame that suits your home and the style of the finished artwork.
Why Choose a Memorial Pet Portrait?
A memorial pet portrait is more than a piece of artwork. It can become a lasting reminder of your pet’s expression, character and the memories you shared together. For many owners, a hand-drawn portrait offers comfort after pet loss and gives them something personal to keep in the home.
A portrait can also sit alongside your chosen memorial product, such as an urn, casket, ashes jewellery or keepsake, giving you another way to remember your pet after cremation.
Memorial Pet Portrait FAQs
Can Sarah create a pet portrait from an old photo?
Yes. Clear photos are best, but Sarah can often work from older or lower-quality photos, especially when a pet has passed away and there may not be many images available. She will look at your photos and advise which one is most suitable.
What animals can be included in a pet portrait?
Sarah can create portraits of dogs, cats and other much-loved animals. If you would like more than one pet included, she can advise on the best portrait size and layout.
Can I choose between graphite pencil and coloured pencil?
Yes. Graphite pencil gives a classic black-and-white finish, while coloured pencil creates a more lifelike result with natural colour and depth. In some cases, Sarah may suggest soft pastels if they would better suit your pet’s coat or features.
Do pet portraits come framed?
Portraits are not currently supplied framed. Each finished portrait is mounted, protected in a cellophane sleeve and carefully packaged for collection or delivery.
Can I order a memorial portrait after my pet has passed away?
Yes. Many portraits are created as memorial pieces for pets who have passed away. Sarah handles these commissions with care and sensitivity, helping you create a lasting reminder of your pet.
